Malvern is in the inner south-eastern suburbs, located between the suburbs of Armadale and Caulfield. Malvern is a prestigious suburb with a new and established community. The socio-demographic includes families, couples and singles.
This stylish suburb has a lovely feel. There are tree lined streets, stunning mansions, immaculate gardens, impressive mid-to-late 20th century apartments, period homes, stylish flats and modern apartments.
The suburb of Malvern attracts many families. There is a variety of excellent and sought after schools and great leisure facilities, including the Harold Holt Swim Centre. There are beautiful parks filled with huge leafy trees and expansive grounds. In summer, the parks provide beautiful shade, and in autumn, there are plenty of leaves to sprinkle in the air and crunch underfoot. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to picnic spots.
Young singles also love the inner-city living that Malvern has to offer. Malvern is under 10 kilometres to the City of Melbourne. There is a sense of space and openness, particularly when strolling through it’s gorgeous parks, there are ample spots to walk your dog, and an excellent bike track that leads to suburbs beyond.
The beautiful parks and gardens include, Hedgeley Dene Gardens, with manicured lawns, a duck pond for the kids and water features. Depending on the time of year, you may see some ducklings. There is Central Park that is perfect for a Sunday gathering or picnic. Here you will find a children’s playground, toilet facilities and there is a nearby café for a bite to eat, or to get your caffeine fix. Phoenix Park has an excellent playground for kids. This is a great space for them to burn off some energy and have some fun, and there is also a café for those sleep deprived mums and dads. The kids will love the wooden fort and you could coincide a play here with a visit to the local library nearby, which often has scheduled activities for kids of all ages.
Go for a ride along Gardiner’s Creek Trail or take your dog for a walk or run. This trail leads into the city and provides an option for cyclists to commute into the city for work. Malvern Urban Forest is a tranquil oasis, also worth a visit.
On Claremont Avenue, you will find Manyung Gallery Malvern (a sister gallery to Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza), where you can admire some contemporary Australian art work. If you appreciate historic buildings, take some time to visit Northbrook House. This Italianate villa was built in the 1880’s and is a very photogenic spot. St John’s Anglican Church is in Malvern East, and is another beautiful building, which is fully operational.
The City of Melbourne is very accessible from Malvern using public transport, via train or tram. There is a busy shopping strip on Glenferrie Road, which begins in Kew. This is also easily accessible by tram and there are three train stations, Glenferrie, Kooyong and Malvern that are located along Glenferrie Road. This used to be where the Australian Open was held, at the Kooyong Tennis Stadium. You will also find Swinburne University of Technology here.
